Tomsk region belongs to the West-Siberian economic region and Siberian Federal district of Russian Federation.
Structure of the region includes 16 local districts, 6 cities (Tomsk, Seversk, Stregevoy, Asino, Kolpashevo, Kedrovy).
History
Tomsk was formed in 1604 by order of Boris Godunov. Tomsk became an administrative center of new province by order of Alexander I. It included the territories of modern Altaisky kray, Novosibirsk oblast, Kemerovskaya oblast, Tomsk oblast, East Kazakhstan and part of Krasnoyarsk kray.
Tomsk region was formed on August 13, 1944.
Geographical position
Tomsk region is located in the southeastern part of the West-Siberian plain. Region borders on Krasnoyarsk , Tyumen , Omsk , Novosibirsk and Kemerovo regions.
The main rivers are Ob, Tom, Chulym, Vasugan.
Distance from Tomsk up to Moscow: : 3500 kms
Territory - 316,9 thousand sq km2.
Moderate climatic zone.
Continental climate.
Population
The common population is 1,06 million. Tomsk population is 483,9 thousand.
Natural Resources
The Region is rich in oil, gas, iron ores, rare metals (titanic ores), nonmetallic building materials (clay, limestone, a building stone), peat (by peat stocks region takes the second place in Russia).
Taken oil resources are more than 333 million tons, gas - about 300 million tons.
Deposits of copper ores, manganese, zinc, antimony, and brown coal are revealed.
Gold is found too. Stocks of underground and thermal mineral waters are great. Wood fund is more then 20 million. hectares (63% of the region territory). More than half of this fund is softwood.
Industry
Oil and Gas industry, petrochemical industry, pharmaceutical industry, wood industry.
Mechanical engineering and metal working (electro technical branch, instrument making; manufacture of the mountain - mine equipment, bearings and tools).
The food-processing industry (meat, dairy, flour-and-cereals industry, fish, alcohol industry etc.)
Oil pipelines and gas mains.
Agriculture
Specialization – meat and milk cattle breeding.
Wheat, rye, potatoes, vegetable width=100%s, flax are grown.
Science and Education
The first in Asian part of Russia University was formed in Tomsk, in 1878 (in 1888 it was opened).
The first technical institute of Siberia was formed in 1896, opened in 1900.
Except these old universities (Tomsk State University and Tomsk Polytechnic University there are Siberian Medical University, Tomsk State University of System Control and Radioelectronics, Tomsk State Pedagogical University and Tomsk State Academy of Building and Architecture).
There are scientific, R&D institutes of Tomsk Scientific Center (Siberian Department of Russian Academy of Science) such as Institute of Optics and Atmosphere, Institute of Oil Chemistry, Institute of Electronics, Institute of Physics of Durability and Meteorology.
Tomsk Scientific Center of Russian Academy of Medical Science includes Research institutes working on the problems of cardiology, oncology, pharmacology, genetics, psychological health, balneology, and physiotherapy.
